    Curtains are the last thing most households think about cleaning and the first thing a visitor notices when the light comes through them. Years of dust, cooking residue and settled pollen dull the colour so gradually that nobody registers it until a curtain is cleaned and hung next to one that has not been.

    The reason they get left is practical. Taking down heavy lined curtains, cleaning them safely and getting them back up is a real job, and a domestic wash often ruins them.

    Why washing curtains at home goes wrong

    Most made to measure curtains are constructed from more than one material. The face fabric, the lining and often an interlining all behave differently when wet, and they shrink at different rates. The result is puckered seams, a lining that hangs shorter than the fabric, and pleats that never sit the same way again.

    Heavy curtains also become extremely heavy when wet, which strains the heading tape and the hooks. Add potential dye bleed on strong colours and the risk starts to outweigh the saving.

    We start by testing the fabric in a concealed area, usually inside the hem or behind the leading edge, to check colour fastness and how the fibre responds. Only then does anything else happen.

    • Application of a solution matched to the fabric, applied evenly and lightly.
    • Gentle agitation to release soil from the weave.

    Which fabrics suit it

    Most conventional curtain fabrics respond well: cotton, cotton blends, polyester, many jacquards and most standard linings. Heavy interlined curtains are often the best candidates precisely because taking them down is the riskiest option.

    Silk, viscose and some loose weave linens need more caution. They can watermark, and viscose in particular loses strength when wet, which is the same behaviour that makes viscose rugs difficult. We test first and will say honestly if a fabric is not suitable for in situ work.

    What it will and will not fix

    In situ cleaning removes dust, airborne grease from kitchens, general dulling and a good deal of settled pollen. Colours lift noticeably and the fabric smells fresh again. Smoke odour usually improves substantially.

    It does not repair sun damage. Where a leading edge has faded from years of direct light, that is dye loss in the fibre and no cleaning restores it. It also will not fix rotted linings, where the lining has degraded from heat and light and begins to shred, which is a replacement job.
