Carpet Spill First Aid — professional cleaning guide
    Stain Care

    Carpet Spill First Aid

What to do in the first few minutes — and the four things never to do.

The outcome of a spill is usually decided in the first few minutes, long before a professional could arrive. Most permanent stains started as spills that were treated incorrectly.

This is the response that gives a professional the best chance later.

    The immediate response

Work quickly, gently, and from the outside in.

    • Lift solids first with a spoon or blunt edge, scraping towards the centre
    • Blot with a clean, dry white cloth — press and lift rather than rub
    • Work from the outside of the spill inwards to stop it spreading
    • Apply small amounts of cool water and keep blotting with fresh cloth areas
    • Dry the area with airflow once no more colour transfers to the cloth

    What not to do

Each of these turns a recoverable spill into a permanent problem.

    • Do not rub — it distorts pile and pushes the spill deeper
    • Do not use hot water on protein spills such as milk, egg or blood, as heat sets them
    • Do not use coloured cloths, which can transfer their own dye
    • Do not use bleach, washing powder or general household sprays on carpet

    When to stop and call

Stop if the stain is spreading, if colour is coming out of the carpet rather than the spill, or if the spill is dye-based such as strongly coloured drinks or hair products.

Tell your cleaner exactly what was spilled and what you applied — it changes the treatment they choose.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Rubbing distorts and fuzzes the pile permanently and drives the spill deeper into the fibre and backing.

Some help, but many leave sticky residue that attracts soil, and a few contain bleaching agents. Always test in a hidden area first.

Sometimes. Fresh spills have the best outlook, but many older stains still improve significantly with correct treatment.
