Leisure facilities combine everything that makes flooring hard to maintain: constant footfall, sweat and moisture, poolside transfer, and opening hours that leave almost no cleaning window.
Odour is the symptom members notice, and it is a moisture and residue problem before it is a fragrance problem.
The specific challenges
Each of these areas behaves differently and needs its own approach.
- Sweat and body oils absorbed into carpet in studio and cardio areas
- Moisture and chemical transfer carried on feet from pool and wet areas
- Continuous footfall from early morning to late evening
- Entrance zones exposed to outdoor soil and weather
- Mixed surfaces — carpet, rubber, vinyl and matting within metres of each other
Odour control
Absorbed sweat in carpet fibres and padding produces persistent odour that fragrance cannot address. The answer is periodic deep extraction of affected zones plus good airflow so textiles dry fully between sessions.
Where odour returns quickly, ventilation and drying are usually the underlying issue rather than cleaning frequency.
Working around opening hours
With minimal closed periods, most facilities rotate deep cleaning through zones overnight or during quiet windows, using low-moisture methods where areas must reopen quickly.
A published rotation keeps every zone covered without ever closing the whole facility.
